Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify factors perceived influential in the decision-making process of first-time college student who matriculated at a small, private liberal arts college. It also analyzed the relationships between college choice factors and selected student biographic characteristics. The survey instrument used for this research was developed by John Michael Ash, (1987) and was based on the 1985 Student Information Form used by Astin. The questionnaire focused on the importance of: Advice; cost; academic and social status. The subjects who participated in this research were 131 first time freshmen who were enrolled in the Fall Semester, 1990. Of the 131 students, 120 chose to participate in this project. The questionnaire was distributed to the students after a mandatory freshmen support gathering at the college. The methods of analyses included factor analysis and Analysis of Variance. Students ranked 12 college-choice influence items which they perceived affected their decision to attend this college in order of importance. Most influential items were äcademic reputation," "graduates get good jobs" and "special education programs". Least influential items were "friends' suggestion," "teachers' advice" and "college representative recruited me". The 12 perceived college-choice influence items were reduced to four factors which comprehensively represented the original number. A series of ANOVAs revealed some significant differences in the perceived college-choice factors. Significant differences were found in the following ANOVAs: gender with social interaction; race with advice of others and social interaction; family income with cost, and mother's education with academic reputation. The findings of this research indicated that the influences of college-choice items and college-choice factors varied according to the selected biographic characteristics of the sample.
