A case study in the Correlation of Analytical and Experimental Analysis

Abstract

For engineers designing products, direct comparisons oft~si-- · and analysis data have not been generally available. A means of mathematically integrating, statistically correlating, and comparing experimental modal analysis and finite element modal analysis data is self-evident. To illustrate the need for the approach to converging lest and finite clement methodology, a case study of an automotive engine fan assembly has been performed. The fan is a typical example of a component design requiring consideration of dynamic characteristics. The investigation progressed from a simplified lest and finite element approach involving one blade in which there is ćry lilllc correlation, lo a lest and finite clement model of the entire assembly in which the correlation was very good. Until the availability of commercial software, integration has required e cxtcnsi,·c knowledge of computer operating systems and file structures and has been generally much easier said than done.
