Abstract
The authors of this article are working for the
companies who :first manufactured and applied
composite longrod insuIators and composite hollow
insulators in the high voltage technology. Now there
are more than 30 and 16 years respectively of
experience, and the non ceramic inSulator technology
convinced with universal possibilities in various
applications of high voltage systems.
This paper describes the development of the insulator
constructio~ especially changes in the application of
the silicone rubber (SiR) housing. With an example of
hollow insulators, it is reported about todays'
mechanical and electrical design methods. A
presentation of the good results from testing and service
includes infonnation about leakage currents, ESDD
(Equivalent Salt Deposite Density) measurements and
the influence of microorgansim vegetation on
insulators.
A special chapter deals 'with research activities due to
the hydrophobic properties of SiR and its lifetime.
