Abstract
Optical ground wires (OPGW) are beginning to be
used on a wide scale in overhead transmission
systems. OPGW are also sensitive to wind induced
(aeolian) vibrations which can cause fatigue of
their wire armour and influence the optical attenuation
of the optical fibres. Detailed published
results of relevant investigations are scarce
until now. For this reason the following pages
will present new information on long term field
vibration measurements on an OPGW, installed on
a 400 kV line in Switzerland, on comparative field
and laboratory tests of suitable dampers and on
the evaluation of its optical transmission performance
after two years' service.
