Such a system makes use of many human language technology (HLT) components, including speech recognition and synthesis, natural language understanding and generation, discourse modeling, and dialogue management. In this contribution, we introduce the nature of these interfaces, describe the underlying HLTs on which they are based, and discuss some of the development issues. After providing a historical perspective, we outline some new research directions.
