After giving some historical landmarks on the development of conductors in France, for use on EHV
overhead lines, this report describes the technique for obtaining Almelec strands, as well as the physical
properties of this alloy, particularly its mechanical and electrical characteristics.
Moreover, it gives the characteristics of. and the possible solutions offered by, various conductor types
which can be manufactured with Almelec (homogeneous conductors, Almelec conductors steel reinforced,
aluminium conductors Almelec reinforced) and summarizes the basis of the French Specifications for this
alloy.
Then, the report outlines the expected advantages by comparison with ACSR (Aluminium Conductor
Steel Reinforced) for eq1,.1ivalent sections for the design of overhead lines, on construction sites and during
the service of the lines.
The report ends with economical comparisons of lines in flat regions and in mountains, and it concludes
by outlining the trends in the use of Almelec ·in the overhead line network of E/ectricite de France.
