Abstract
This chapter deals with overhead power line insulation co-ordination. Not all aspects can
be covered in this chapter, however, some key points and fundamental concepts, which
have a direct bearing on local overhead power line design, are discussed. The chapter
begins with the elements of insulation co-ordination and how these affect overhead
power line parameters. The remainder of the chapter covers line compaction, live-line
maintenance and the influence of fires on the insulation strength of overhead power
lines.
High voltage insulation co-ordination research in South Africa has concentrated on the
study of the influence of reduced air density on the breakdown strength and corona
properties of overhead power line configurations. This is because the raised internal plateau
of South Africa places most lines at a significant altitude above sea-level (approximately
1300 m). The research has facilitated the optimisation of overhead power line geometries.
It has also led to the development of compact 400 kV lines and compact cross-rope
suspension structures, both of which can accommodate novel live-line maintenance
techniques.
