Abstract
Strymónas' river basin, where lies one of the largest and most fertile plain lands of Greece, is described by a complex hydraulic system. Par example, the latter is being driven by processes taking place due to engineered infrastructure of Kerkini's reservoir, or by Aggiti's water way discharge; as also by the transboundary management between Greek and Bulgarian States. Lately, an increasing tension in flood events is being noticed, with a negative impact to people's livelihood and local economy. This negative impact has been further enhanced by the late economic crisis and the lack of funding resources for a long term solution. Thence, East Macedonia's Department of GEOTEE in consistency to its institutionalized role of State's counselor for the primary sector, introduced the corresponding working group and provided specialists – under Chamber's supervision and peer-review – for gathering and assessing relevant information, so that to conclude and suggest measures related to flood management in Strymónas' river basin. These measures are framed by the sustainability and environmental protection (natural and agricultural) under the provisions of applicable legislation.
