Abstract
The paper presents the merits of RTV
coated glass insulators over silicone rubber
composite insulators. The weaknesses of silicone
rubber composite insulators are discussed that
come about because of inadequate relief of electric
stress, poor design concepts, lack of understanding
of composite insulator material properties and poor
quality control during their manufacture. RTV
coated glass insulators are shown to be the closest to
the ideal insulator for polluted environments and
one that has the lowest life-cycle cost.
