Mit dem Beschluss des ver.di-Bundesvorstandes vom 24. September 2012 bezieht ver.di eine klare, handlungsorientierte Position in der aktuellen und zum Teil hitzig geführten Debatte um den Stellenwert des Urheberrechts. Das Ziel ist, die Urheberrechte durchzusetzen, um eine ökonomisch tragfähige Existenz von professionellen Werkschaffenden zu erhalten.

Die "Initiative gegen ein Leistungsschutzrecht" (IGEL) will über eine Gefahr aufklären, die den deutschsprachigen Teil des Internets stärker gefährden könnte als der JMStV
