Sie sind Broterwerb und Hobby. Ja, im Grunde sind sie Lebensinhalt. Das würde die stellvertretende Leiterin der Reutlinger Stadtbibliothek zwar nüchterner formulieren. Doch ihre offensichtliche Liebe zur Literatur lässt gar keinen anderen Schluss zu: Ein Dasein ohne Bücher ist für Elisabeth Sträter undenkbar.
Die Zahl der Menschen, die noch regelmäßig ein Buch lesen, nimmt stetig ab. Die Zahl der Analphabeten im Land ist hoch. Bibliotheken wie in Gadebusch wollen dem entgegen steuern.
"Leben-Lernen-Kultur", so lautet das Motto der 56. Fachkonferenz der Bibliotheksfachstellen in Deutschland, die diese Woche in Karlsruhe stattfindet. Die Leiter dieser Stellen aus allen Bundesländern wollen, dass die öffentliche Bibliothek noch mehr zu einer zentralen Einrichtung der Kommunen wird.
