Seit geraumer Zeit betreibt das Privatunternehmen den Aufbau einer universellen, für jeden Menschen zugänglichen Bibliothek in elektronischer Form. Google Buchsuche ist damit zu einer kulturellen, ökonomischen und urheber- rechtlichen Herausforderung für Bibliotheken und Verlage geworden.
Die Grenzen ihres Landstrichs, die Grenzen ihrer Konfession und ihrer Nation bedeuteten die Grenzen ihrer Welt. Was jenseits davon lag, war ihnen fremd, oft feindlich. Magazine wurden als neues Medium der Google Buchsuche hinzugefügt. Zunächst sind es um die 10 Magazine die Einzug in den elektronischen Datenbestand der Google Buchsuche gehalten haben. Die Zahl soll wachsen.
Der Deutsche Kulturrat blickt mit gemischten Gefühlen auf das Jahr 2008 zurück und in das Jahr 2009 hinein. Angesichts zu erwartender Sparzwänge in allen Bereichen sei 2008 die Chance vertan worden, das Staatsziel Kultur im Grundgesetz zu verankern, meinte die Spitzenorganisation der Bundeskulturverbände am Montag in einer Jahresbilanz. Das werde sich möglicherweise bitter rächen können, wenn es im Zuge der Finanzkrise zu drastischen Einsparungen in den öffentlichen Haushalten komme.
