Google digitalisiert das Wissen der Welt. Wer dagegen protestiert, gilt als Spielverderber. Autoren und Verleger in Deutschland und den USA bekommen das zu spüren.
Dabei geht Google immer schamloser zu Werke und enteignet kollektiv die europäische Produktion an Büchern ihrer spirituellen und materiellen Basis. Damit meine ich nicht nur etwa einen Fall wie den, dass ich auf dem Server von GoogleBooks vor einem Vierteljahr auf den vollständig eingescannten, mit OCR-Software behandelten Briefband unserer Kleist-Ausgabe (Briefe 1, 1793-1801) stieß. Hier konnte man bei der geistlosen Art, die solchem Freibeutertum eigen zu sein scheint, noch annehmen, dass der Titel für das Erscheinungsjahr genommen wurde - einen Klett-Cotta-Band Goethe erblickte ich ebenda als so genannten Volltext mit dem Erscheinungsjahr 1693!.
Der Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels will mit einer Musterklage gegen die Universitätsbibliothek Würzburg erreichen, dass gesetzlich begünstigte öffentliche Einrichtungen Werke aus ihrem Bestand erst nach Lizenzverhandlungen mit Verlagen digital zugänglich machen dürfen. Die Interessensvertretung will im Auftrag besonders betroffener Verlage wie C.H. Beck laut einem Bericht des Buchreports dafür kämpfen, dass Bibliotheken vor der Bereitstellung von Büchern über elektronische Leseplätze prüfen müssen, ob der Verlag selbst eine digitale Version anbietet.
WÜRZBURG (sam) Da hatte die Würzburger Universitätsbibliothek einmal eine gute Idee, wie sie die Studiengebühren sinnvoll nutzt: Die 500 meist ausgeliehenen Bücher wurden Studenten seit Dezember an Terminals öffentlich zugänglich gemacht; 70.000 Euro hatte die Uni dafür investiert. Die Digitalisierung widerspricht jedoch dem Paragrafen 52b des Urheberrechtes, sagt der Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels. Jetzt droht die Klage.

Jahrhundert.
Im Streit um die Digitalisierung von Millionen Büchern gehen deutsche Verlage, Autoren und die Verwertungsgesellschaft VG Wort auf Konfrontation zum Internetkonzern Google.
20. Januar 2009 Google bekommt bei seinen hochfliegenden Plänen zur „Buchsuche“ im Internet Gegenwind aus Deutschland. Die VG Wort, der Verband deutscher Schriftsteller und der Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels kündigen ein gemeinsames Vorgehen gegen die ungenehmigte Digitalisierung von Büchern in den Vereinigten Staaten an.

u diesen langfristigen Themen gehört die Auseinandersetzung mit den Auswirkungen der Digitalisierung auf den Kulturbereich. Auch im digitalen Zeitalter müssen Künstler und andere Rechteinhaber von der Verwertung ihrer Werke leben können. Raubkopien sind kein Kavaliersdelikt. Und wenn Unternehmen wie Google Bücher aus Bibliotheken in großem Umfang einscannen, um sie online zur Verfügung stellen zu können, ohne die Rechteinhaber zuvor zu informieren und ihr Einverständnis einzuholen, zeigt dies, wie weit das fehlende Unrechtsbewusstsein inzwischen reicht. Ein Schwerpunkt der Arbeit des Deutschen Kulturrates im Jahr 2009 werden die Digitalisierung und ihre Auswirkungen sein.
Wahrscheinlich träumt jeder Wissenschaftler mit kleinem Geldbeutel davon, nicht mehr durch die Archive und Bibliotheken halb Europas reisen zu müssen, um die notwendigen Dokumente und Bücher für seine Forschung zu finden. Von heute an könnte dieser Traum wahr werden: Die europäische digitale Bibliothek Europeana geht online.
Dieses Grünbuch soll eine Diskussion darüber in Gang bringen, in welcher Form Informationen, die für Forschung, Wissenschaft und Unterricht von Belang sind, am besten online verbreitet werden können. Darüber hinaus werden eine Reihe von Themen angesprochen, die mit der Rolle des Urheberrechts in der wissensbestimmten Gesellschaft in Zusammenhang stehen, und wird ausgehend davon eine Konsultation eingeleitet.
Es regt sich Widerstand gegen Googles Vereinbarung mit US-Autorenverbänden zur Buch-Suchmaschine. Der deutsche Buchhandel wehrt sich gegen das »amerikanische Modell«.
