Kismet is an 802.11 layer2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system. Kismet will work with any wireless card which supports raw monitoring (rfmon) mode, and can sniff 802.11b, 802.11a, and 802.11g traffic.

"Wir erwarten nicht, wirklich überhaupt eine Version 3.0 zu brauchen", sagte er. Linux sei nicht vom Marketing getrieben und benötige daher keine vermarktbaren Namen wie Vista oder Panther. Techniker bräuchten eben Versionsnummern. Bei den Distributoren sehe das schon anders aus, diese sollten ihre Produkte nennen wie immer sie wollten.

Torvalds bevorzugt kleine Software-Änderungen, die schnell in die stabile Version des Kernels einfließen können. Würde man häufig größere Versionssprünge machen, so würde dies vor allem den Distributoren Probleme bereiten: Sie müssten schließlich auch ältere Versionen unterstützen und Neuerungen des aktuellen Kernels dort einpflegen. Mit der 2.6-er Version des Kernels ist Torvalds durchaus zufrieden, die Code-Basis sei "in einem guten Zustand".
