TYPE DESIGN, TYPOGRAPHY, TYPEFACES AND FONTS
These pages offer over 70,000 entries with information on type design, type designers, the history and choice of fonts and typefaces, the mathematics of type design, font software, and typographic matters in general. The subjects are cross-classified by country, language, tag, style, and category. Each item also has a dedicated subpage with additional images not shown on the main pages [click on pink dots like ⦿]. I started this work in 1993.
Until now, chances are that if we dropped text onto a web page in a system font at a reasonable size, it was legible. But with many typefaces about to be freed for use on websites, choosing the right ones to complement a site’s design will be far more challenging. Many faces to which we’ll soon have access were never meant for screen use, either because they’re aesthetically unsuitable or because they’re just plain illegible. Jason Santa Maria, a force behind improved type on the web, presents qualities and methods to keep in mind as we venture into the widening world of web type.
When PENGUIN was founded in 1935 with the radical concept of producing inexpensive paperback editions of high quality books, it adopted an equally progressive approach to typography and cover design. Under Jan Tschichold in the 1940s and Germano Facetti in the 1960s, Penguin became an exemplar of book design.
