As you read your assignments, you are to make a reading journal entry. If you write your entries in cursive, each should be at least one page long (without skipping lines) but seldom longer than three pages long. If you wordprocess your entries, then skip lines and make each entry from one to three pages in length.
The Codex Seraphinianus is a book written and illustrated by the Italian artist, architect and industrial designer Luigi Serafini during thirty months, from 1976 to 1978.[1] The book is approximately 360 pages long (depending on edition), and appears to be a visual encyclopedia of an unknown world, written in one of its languages, a thus-far undeciphered alphabetic writing.

“It’s hard for me to imagine someone dedicating themselves to producing page after page of what looks like writing without it being writing, just for that purpose,” Jackson said.
when setting up WordPress on a remote system I need to be able to get the tarball with the latest release on the server. It seems silly to copy it to my desktop and then use scp to upload it to the server. That's twice the time (at least). Instead, I use wget to grab the tarball while I'm SSH'ed into the server and save myself a few minutes.
Finally, wget is scriptable. If you want to scrape a Web site or download a file every day at a certain time, you can use wget as part of a script that you call from a cron job.
Let readers attempt to build up their own numeracy in a very simple way. All they need to do is to get a sheet of paper and write down on it the numbers 1 to 20. Then they should proceed to think a bit about some large numbers that seem of interest to them, and try to estimate them within one order of magnitude (or two, for the larger ones). By "estimate" here, I mean actually do a back-of-the-envelope (or mental) calculation, ignoring all but factors of ten. Then they should attach the idea to the computed number.

Learning to program is like learning to write good natural language. The best way to do it is to read some stuff written by masters of the form, write some things yourself, read a lot more, write a little more, read a lot more, write some more ... and repeat until your writing begins to develop the kind of strength and economy you see in your models.

RDF and Topic Maps may appear to address this problem (they are after all specifications for expressing “semantic relations,” and they both have XML transfer syntaxes), but in reality their focus is on generic semantics — propositions about the real world — and not the semantics of markup languages.
Working Papers are pre-publication versions of academic articles, book chapters, or reviews. Papers posted on this site are in progress, under submission, or in press and forthcoming elsewhere. Although, as far as we know, this is the first Working Papers series in the field of Classics, such series are very common in other academic disciplines.
The more I write code and design systems, the more I understand that many times, you can achieve the desired functionality simply with clever reconfigurations of the basic Unix tool set.
The much-anticipated—and dreaded—report outlines the coalition government's plans to address the largest budget deficit Britain has faced outside of wartime. Almost all government departments, excluding health and overseas aid, will see their budgets cut by an average of 19 percent over four years, according to the so-called spending review. Cuts of 83 billion pounds (about $131-billion) are expected to result in the elimination of 490,000 public-sector jobs.
The news for British universities is particularly bad: Excluding research support, which will remain flat, the amount of money going to higher education will decline by 40 percent over the next four years, from 7.1 billion pounds (about $11-billion) to 4.2 billion pounds (about $6.6-billion).

This project on the textual hand-with-pointing-finger symbol--what I will call the "manicule" for reasons to be explored below--grows out of a book-in-progress called Used Books: Reading Renaissance Marginalia, which is the product of my long-standing interest in the marks that readers make in books, particularly during the first century or two after the invention of printing.
Social attitudes take time to evolve and are best reinforced by changes in the educational system. The social fabric must be rebuilt over time. The change in mode of production through evolutionary means will not happen overnight, and concepts of community wealth and civic responsibility that have been eroded over time, by the divide and conquer individualism of the neo-liberal era, have to be restored.
Part of this social transition – to changing the way we value human activity and time use – will require a strong humanities presence in our education system. It is much harder to construct the humanities in a market model and that is why it is under attack. But equally, that is why it has to be a vanguard leading our societies into a new “non-financial” appraisal of worth and value.

Over the past few months, the academic and scientific communities of Croatia have been voicing their displeasure with proposed revisions to the national legislation governing the country's universities and its science and higher education organizations. Critics have argued, for example, that the changes would take away university autonomy and freedom of scientific expression because universities and research priorities would come under direct governmental control.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov has outraged the academic community by his latest cost-cutting move to close the state's oldest scientific body, the Bulgarian Academy of Science.
Under the plan, which has been presented as a "restructuring" of the 141-year-old institution, the government would only continue to fund departments that directly serve the state, such as the meteorological and the seismological institutes. "The rest will join the universities," Mr Borisov said.
