Einst als Ort der Wissensaneignung geschätzt, verändert die Bibliothek angesichts des digitalen Wandels dramatisch ihren Charakter. Früher standen die Bücher im Vordergrund, heute sind es die Besucher. Die Bibliothek wird zum Treffpunkt.
Seit es keine Bücherbusse mehr gibt, fehlen auf dem Lande Möglichkeiten zum Ausleihen. Eine Alternative sehen Bibliothekare nur in elektronischen Medien. Doch den meisten Bibliotheken fehlt die Möglichkeit dazu.
Seit 2003 veröffentlicht die Kommission für One-Person Libraries in lockerer Folge "Checklisten", welche bei Alltagsproblemen einer One-Person Library eine Hilfestellung geben sollen. Sie sind als Working Papers konzipiert, welche einem Aufgabenbereich Struktur zu geben vermögen und in Stichworten die "Essentials" des betreffenden Gebietes auflisten sollen.
Vorbild dieser Reihe ist die unvergesssene Checkliste One-Person Libraries von Guy St. Clair, welche vom ebenso unvergessenen Deutschen Bibliotheksinstitut, Berlin in der Reihe "Arbeitshilfen" verlegt wurde.
