Suffolk County Council CYP South and West Ipswich Locality has 3,000 children under five years of age living in the population. Many of these children live in the 20% poorest households in the country. In February 2013 head teachers from local primary schools requested help from the Integrated Services Manager (Health) for assistance in preparing children for school learning. It was agreed that the most pressing need was toilet training as there were a high number of children in their reception years who were still in nappies or ‘pull-ups’ and this was diverting attention away from their learning.
ow Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire Clinical Commissioning Groups are extending the matron’s beat by employing a new ‘Care Home Matron’ in a 12-month project to support staff and improve care practice and the health of patients at 20 homes across the region.
The Care Home Matron, a senior frailty specialist nurse, will begin work in January 2017and will offer members of staff daily face-to-face contact, education and leadership as well as developing a training and competency package which can be applied across care homes.
The challenges faced by staff when breaking bad news have previously been researched in relation to particular settings or subjects. There is growing interest in the relationships between depressive symptoms and burnout in healthcare staff and the safety of patient care. Depressive symptoms are higher in healthcare staff than the general population and overlap conceptually with burnout. However, minimal research has investigated these variables in nurses. Given the conceptual overlap between depressive symptoms and burnout, there is also a need for an explanatory model outlining the relative contributions of these factors to patient safety. A caseload management tool was developed with the aim of creating a straightforward, unbiased way of assessing a clinician's caseload for the community mental health teams (CMHTs) in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. For the first time, the tool developed allows for individual clinicians to record caseloads electronically, enabling decision makers and their teams to assess caseloads. The newly developed tool also has the capability to assess a client's individual weighting score over time. Interim guidance on pay for nurse apprentices has been issued for employers that are running courses from September 2017.
The NHS Staff Council is currently in discussions regarding what the appropriate pay rates may be for individuals undertaking a nurse apprenticeship (and other higher and degree related apprenticeships). However, these discussions are unlikely to be completed in time for the small number of nurse apprenticeship training courses running from September 2017.
