This study demonstrates a couple of things. It supports current understanding – that the majority of people are exposed to BPA through food and drink packaging, and that BPA can be detected in urine.
It also shows how difficult it would be to try to manipulate our diets to reduce BPA exposure.
But it can't really tell us a great deal more than this.
This guidance is a step by step guide on how to use Spend and Outcome Tool (SPOT) for Local Authorities (LAs) to compare spend data on sexual and reproductive health with sexual and reproductive health outcomes.

Though cultural competence and inclusion of diverse identities are increasingly emphasized in psychological training and practice, sexual health and well-being among people with disabilities (PWD) continue to be underrecognized areas in which disability cultural competence is needed. The experience of disability is best conceptualized as an interaction between physical, sensory, or cognitive differences and environmental and sociocultural contexts that facilitate or impede adaptive functioning; these complex interactions, coupled with an individual’s age, gender, ethnicity, religious background, and sexual orientation, often inform one’s sexual health and well-being. Disability can be thought of as a minority cultural status—a marginalized and stigmatized identity. . To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.

Some UK local authorities are using Dutch “sex positive” educational materials in the hope of increasing contraceptive use, reports Tony Sheldon
As the UK government opens a public consultation on what English schools should teach in sex education classes, Rutgers, an influential non-governmental organisation that promotes sexual and reproductive health and rights in the Netherlands, recently celebrated its 50th birthday. It is justifiably proud that the country’s teenage pregnancy rates are among the lowest, and contraceptive use the highest, in Europe.

To Google or not to Google, that is the question emerging for quality sexual health advice. We can all search the internet without shame or fear of embarrassment, whatever the question. A 2017 UK survey of 3221 people aged 16 years or older found that 41% of internet users go online for health related questions, with half of these (22%) having done so in the previous week.1 But do smartphones and their digital assistants offer quality sexual health advice? To find out we jumped into bed (albeit independently), pulled out our smartphones, and asked Siri and Google Assistant. We then compared their answers with a laptop based Google search.

Public Health England had launched ‘Protect against STIs’, a new campaign that aims to reduce the rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among 16 to 24-year-olds through condom usage. The campaign is the first government sexual health campaign in 8 years.
The results of this study are significant at population level as millions of women across the globe use hormonal contraception. But the risk at an individual level remains tiny.
With sexual health service commissioning beset by intense financial pressures and split responsibilities, the specialties of genitourinary medicine and sexual and reproductive health face an uncertain future.

HIV patients who attend CNWL’s Bloomsbury Clinic who are stable on treatment are being urged to consider virtual (email or phone) appointments to replace some of their face to face appointments.
This is more convenient as people do not have to come to the clinic (which takes up a lot of time) and helps use our clinic space and time more efficiently.
The research found that women from around the world who had ever used an IUD had a reduced risk of cervical cancer compared with those who hadn't used one, but it's not clear whether this would be true in the UK. There could have been other reasons for the results that were specific to the individual countries where the studies were carried out – a mix of developed nations, such as Spain, and developing nations, such as Kenya.
The research suggests that if newer HPV testing is more effective than the standard cervical screening test that looks for abnormal cells, this could also benefit women who haven’t been vaccinated against HPV. With the new type of test, these women may only need half as many cervical screening tests as they are currently offered in their lifetime.
In primary care settings, nurses often provide much basic contraception care and advice. Nurses should ensure that they work within the limits of their competence and are aware of how and where to refer women for specialist support, if required.

Objective: The aim of our study was to expand the existing research by examining the relationship between current dog ownership and depression for a sample of PLHIV while controlling for demographic characteristics and other potential confounders.
Use of electronic pill bottles that record when they are opened and follow-up discussion of the printed readouts with nurses improved HIV outcomes. It is thought that patients became more reliable in taking the medication, which can have complicated scheduling. Overall, the HIV virus in the blood and the risk of treatment failure were lower in the group of patients who had access to this intervention compared to regular care.
Public Health England (PHE) has announced the projects which have been awarded funding from the HIV Prevention Innovation Fund for 2017 to 2018. The projects have been chosen from across England to receive total funding of £600,000 from the Department of Health through PHE.
Digital innovations with internet/mobile phones offer a potential cost-saving solution for overburdened health systems with high service delivery costs to improve efficiency of HIV/STI (sexually transmitted infections) control initiatives. However, their overall evidence has not yet been appraised. We evaluated the feasibility and impact of all digital innovations for all HIV/STIs.

In the researchers’ model, a quarter of new infections of HIV among men who have sex with men would be avoided. Costs over 80 years would drop from £20.6 billion to £19.6 billion – a saving of £1 billion.
Gender dysphoria describes the psychological distress caused by identifying with the sex opposite to the one assigned at birth. In recent years, much progress has been made in characterizing the needs of transgender persons wishing to transition to their preferred gender, thus helping to optimize care. This critical review of the literature examines their common mental health issues, several individual risk factors for psychiatric comorbidity, and current research on the underlying neurobiology. The researchers found that 6% of men and 1% of women carried potentially cancer-causing strains of HPV in their mouth. They noted that this was more common in smokers and in men with an increased number of oral sex partners. However, the study can't prove causation and is not precise enough to link a specific number of partners with risk of carrying oral HPV – or of cancer.
They also looked at registry data to see how common mouth and throat cancers were in people carrying these harmful oral HPV strains and found that it is still very rare: estimated at 7 in 1,000 men and 2 in 1,000 women.
Researchers sat they have found a link between a type of bacteria in the vagina and risk of contracting chlamydia.

This was an observational study using data sent by EU and EEC member states to the European Surveillance System for HIV.
This type of study is useful for identifying trends in diagnosis rates, but relies on accurate data reporting and collection.
Actual rates of HIV may be higher, as this only takes into account people who have had a positive test.
Implications for practice and research
Healthcare providers should be aware that adolescent and young adult women may receive few positive messages about intrauterine device (IUD) use from their family and friends, and lean heavily on their healthcare provider for information about IUDs.
When counselling adolescents and young adults about contraceptive options, healthcare providers should communicate the safety of IUDs, reversibility of the method, and that menstrual changes after IUD placement are expected and do not threaten future fertility.

Child maltreatment has been associated with sexual risk behaviors. Previous investigators have typically studied only one form of maltreatment, preventing them from exploring interrelations between forms of maltreatment and their impact on sexual risk behaviors. Thus, this study aims to examine the unique, cumulative, and interactive effects of four maltreatment forms (sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, and witnessing interparental violence) on sexual risk behaviors. The sample comprised 1940 sexually active adolescents (Mage = 15.6; 60.8% girls) attending [Blinded = Quebec (Canada)] high schools.
