Implementation of the PrEP Impact trial has been a huge success with over 10,000 participants already enrolled in this important HIV prevention measure.
But, the speed of recruitment and demand for PrEP has significantly exceeded initial expert predictions and the trial researchers now consider that more places should be made available. They argue that recruitment needs to reach a “steady state’ in order to ensure the trial can robustly and scientifically inform the design and rollout of a full national programme in partnership with local authorities. They have also said that the increase will be important for addressing emerging questions from the trial about the need for PrEP amongst women and other groups.
NHS England’s plan to eliminate Hepatitis C in England by 2025 is on track after all aspects of a High Court challenge by pharmaceutical company AbbVie were dismissed.
The NHS’s single largest medicines procurement, a deal worth almost £1 billion over five years, was launched in April last year but contract start dates had to be delayed by six months after legal action by AbbVie.

BPS blog post by Christian Jarrett. In western nations, the vast majority of sexually active women take the birth control pill at some point in their lives, usually to avoid becoming pregnant. Of increasing interest to some psychologists, the hormone-stabilising effects of the pill may have other important effects, including on the psyche and personal relationships, and these are the focus of a new study in Neurology, Psychiatry and Brain Research.
This document reviews equality issues related to human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in England, to support consideration of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation’s advice on extending HPV vaccination to adolescent boys.
The document also covers equality issues around the current HPV vaccination programme for adolescent girls and men who have sex with men (MSM). The analysis was used to support a ministerial decision on whether or not to extend the existing HPV vaccination programme to adolescent boys.
Headlines like the one in the Mail Online, saying that "men should start a family before they are 35 to avoid their children having birth defects", are not just scaremongering, but wrong.
The study found a small increase in some risks to babies born to fathers over 45, and didn't look at birth abnormalities.
The study's main strength is its size and the amount of information available to researchers. But it has some limitations.
The media generally reported the story accurately. But it's a shame the news stories didn't make it clearer that the chance of these pregnancy complications is small, regardless of how long you wait between pregnancies.
Screening young adults who are sexually active for genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection is promoted in several high-income countries, but its effectiveness at the population level is highly debated. The Mail's coverage is accurate. But it could have made it clearer that the sexual health behaviour of teenagers in 1 region of Canada may not be representative of a similar population in the UK.
The news website does point out that the fall in sexual activity among teenage girls could be due to wider social trends that have little or nothing to do with HPV vaccination.

People with mental disorder and intellectual disability have the same rights to sexual expression as other people, albeit that in some cases a lack of capacity may require curtailment of those rights and regard must be had to protecting the vulnerable. Furthermore, the formation or maintenance of sexual relations, or the attainment of sexual fulfilment, may assist in the maintenance or restoration of mental health or well-being. This article demonstrates how the courts in England and Wales, applying statute law and judicial precedent, are largely supportive of the rights of people with mental disorder or intellectual disability to make decisions about sexual expression, sexual relationships and related matters, notwithstanding some societal and staff attitudes that act to prevent them fulfilling their sexual needs and making decisions about sexual and reproductive matters.. A study commissioned by The Hepatitis C Trust showed 80% of people were aware of HCV, however, less than 40% knew it infects the liver, and less than 30% knew the virus is curable.
Open access. Sexual dysfunctions are associated with multiple medical and psychiatric disorders, as well as pharmacotherapies used to treat these disorders. Although sexual dysfunctions negatively affect both quality of life and treatment adherence, patients infrequently volunteer these symptoms and clinicians do not pose directed questions to determine their presence or severity. This issue is especially important in psychiatric patients, for whom most common psychotropics may cause sexual dysfunctions (antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics and mood-stabilising agents). There is limited literature addressing benzodiazepines, and alprazolam in particular.

A 30-year-old man presented with 1-month history of asymptomatic, reddish, scaly plaques over his palms and soles for which he was being treated for palmoplantar psoriasis. On examination, a painless indurated ulcer (primary chancre) was noted on the upper labial mucosa. Oral mucosa had snail track ulcers and mucous patches. There were split papules at the angles of mouth and alar creases. Erythematous papules were also present over the body, coalescing at flexures to form moist plaques (condyloma lata).......
