ORCHA, the Organisation for the Review of Care and Health Applications has developed a safe, simple and highly effective way to validate health apps and provide a convenient rating scale to guide clinicians and the general public.
ORCHA also empowers health and care professionals to identify, engage with and actively promote apps that will have a positive impact on their patients and service users health and wellbeing outcomes.
There are three strands to the services – care navigation, health coaching and tele-health vital sign monitoring – all of which are funded by the Bassetlaw Clinical Commissioning Group. Care navigation involves telephonic sign-posting, giving information and advice to patients previously diagnosed with a long term condition. Those people who identify a health-related goal to work towards use the health coaching service which encourages positive lifestyle behaviour change. Tele health vital sign monitoring uses equipment in the home to monitor vital signs and warn healthcare professionals if they need to take action.
Open access. The rapidly expanding field of mobile health (mHealth) seeks to harness increasingly affordable and ubiquitous mobile digital technologies including smartphones, tablets, apps and wearable devices to enhance clinical care. Accumulating evidence suggests that mHealth interventions are increasingly being adopted and valued by people living with serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, as a means of better understanding and managing their condition. We draw on experiences from three geographically and methodologically distinct mHealth studies to provide a pragmatic overview of the key challenges and considerations relating to the process of developing digital interventions for this population.
Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the association between theoretical behavior change mechanisms and use of mental and emotional self-help apps and whether the use of such apps is associated with mental health behaviors.
Open access. The evidence base for digital interventions for physical and mental health, including severe and enduring mental health difficulties, is increasing. In a feasibility trial, web-based Enhanced Relapse Prevention (ERPonline) for bipolar disorder demonstrated high recruitment and retention rates. Relative to participants in the waitlist control group, those who received ERPonline showed increased monitoring for early warning signs of relapse and had developed more positive illness models.
Objective: The study aim was to identify patient factors associated with short-term and long-term portal usage after patients registered to access all portal functions.
Clinical effectiveness: ChatHealth has potential to have a positive impact as a communication platform in school nursing services compared with standard care. There is no comparative or quantitative evidence with relevant outcomes to demonstrate clinical effectiveness. Limited evidence is available on the use of the system and type of queries received.
The use of virtual reality to help with the exercise programme for patients has been introduced as part of the Better Care Together strategy, and has already been well-received amongst the patients who have used it.
As well as being able to take part in breathing exercises from the comfort of their own homes - helping to avoid visits to hospital or community facilities, the trailblazing use of new technology also allows health professionals to securely monitor the exercise programme people are using, ensuring that they can be tailored as required.
Public Health England (PHE) has developed a process to encourage the development of effective health apps.
This recommended assessment procedure was created in order for apps to be considered for use by health professionals, and has been developed and refined through consultation and real-life testing.

Mobile computing technology presents various possibilities and challenges for psychological assessment. Within forensic and correctional psychology, assessment of justice-involved persons facilitated by such technology has not been empirically examined. Accordingly, this randomized controlled experiment involved administering questionnaires about risk—needs, treatment readiness, and computerized technology opinions to a large (N = 212) and diverse sample of individuals under custodial correctional supervision using either a tablet computer or traditional paper-and-pencil materials.
