Difficulty in emotion regulation is a hallmark feature of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Skills training concepts based on dialectical-behaviour therapy (DBT) are common and effective treatment options for specifically addressing lacking skills in emotion regulation. However, so far it is unclear which aspects of coping change over the course of DBT skills training and if these coping strategies predict symptom change. Evidence for mentalisation-based therapy (MBT) is increasing in relation to the treatment of personality disorder. Individuals with personality disorder are over-represented in inpatient, forensic and forensic inpatient mental health services. This study explores MBT within a forensic setting as an intervention designed to moderate deficits linked to violence and to improve adaptive coping. A North Somerset team has taken to the airwaves to bust a few myths about Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
Dr Gintalaite-Bieliauskiene, Gemma Gowing Team Leader and a service user of the North Somerset's Emotional Intensity Team had a top slot on a recent Dr Phil Hammond show on BBC Radio Bristol.
The team were invited on the show to talk about some of the myths associated with term BPD and why they are using another name to describe the condition. The interview also gave a great opportunity to signpost people to treatment and support.
Both borderline personality disorder and broadly defined bipolar disorder are common (prevalence: 1-6%). Comorbidity occurs in approximately 1 in 5 (Fornaro et al, 2016) with a high symptom overlap; impulsivity, suicidal behaviour and affective instability.
This commonly leads to misdiagnosis in outpatient settings:
25% of patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder were, in fact, borderline personality disorder patients
44% of borderline personality disorder patients had their diagnosis corrected to bipolar disorder.
The problem of misdiagnosis spans psychiatry as this occurs in other conditions (Vöhringer, et al 2016; OConghaile et al, 2015; Zbozinek et al, 2012).
Over the last couple of years Peter Regan has helped our Personality Disorder Hub to produce training videos for health professionals around personality disorder. The videos have been produced by people with lived experience of personality disorder and carers of people with a personality disorder.
