Shropshire’s two acute hospitals have not seen a case of MRSA bacteraemia and the most serious hospital-acquired pressure ulcers for more than eight months, figures show today.
Eating seafood once a week or more is associated with higher levels of mercury in the brain, but these were not correlated with more brain neuropathology, a study in JAMA has found.1 In fact, the analysis of autopsied brains showed that moderate seafood consumption was correlated with less Alzheimer’s disease neuropathology. Open access. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a commonly occurring mental illness. There are multiple treatments for PTSD that have similar effectiveness, but these treatments differ substantially in other ways. It is desirable to have well-informed patients involved in treatment choices. A patient decision aid (PtDA) is one method to achieve this goal. This manuscript describes the rationale and development of a patient decision aid (PtDA) designed for patients with PTSD.
Depression in older people is commonly under diagnosed and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Because older people currently occupy 65% of acute hospital beds, it is crucial for them to be properly assessed for depression to optimise their medical care. The aim of this study was to identify potential risk factors for depression in the medically ill in order to improve their inpatient care. Login using your SSSFT NHS OpenAthens for full text. NICE – the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence – is consulting on potential new indicators for the NICE indicator menu. Indicators encourage health professionals to assess patients on a range of key health issues where diagnosis and treatment is supported by evidence-based guidelines. The aim is to tackle widespread public health challenges one patient at a time. Areas where indicators are being suggested include diabetes and stroke.

Comprehensive assessment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms includes parent and teacher questionnaires. The ADHD Rating Scale–5 was developed to incorporate changes for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM–5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013). This study examined the fit of a correlated, 2-factor structure of ADHD (i.e., DSM–5 conceptual model) and alternative models; determined whether ADHD symptom ratings varied across teacher and child demographic characteristics; and presented normative data. Follow-up data from the CoBalT trial poses an interesting clinical question (Wiles et al, 2016). If an individual has apparently treatment-resistant depression and antidepressant ‘usual care’ appears the only option available, is there any possible benefit to providing a moderate length course of CBT alongside the medication, and if so, what are the benefits and how long do they last for? Could benefits be detected not just months, but years after the end of therapy?
A landmark £1.2bn (€1.6bn; $1.8bn) overhaul of services in Staffordshire for patients with cancer and for people at the end of life, dubbed by critics as “the biggest NHS privatisation yet,” has been put on hold until an inquiry into the collapse of a contract for older people’s care in Cambridgeshire has concluded.
The procurement of two contracts worth £700m for cancer care and £500m for end of life care in Staffordshire has proved controversial because of the sums of money involved and because it could lead to private firms directly running specialist services.1
The four clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) managing the procurement subsequently revealed that NHS and private sector bidders had come together to form a joint consortium, which was now the sole bidder for the contract. To read the full article, log in using your NHS Athens
