Patients at a North East hospital are encouraging staff to get their flu jab by designing a flu-fighting superhero named ‘Superjab.’
The Arts Project at Northgate Hospital in Morpeth, which is part of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (NTW), a provider of mental health and disability services designed some artwork to form part of the hospital’s flu campaign.
Jane Akhurst, Arts Project Manager at NTW said: “We love a challenge and we jumped at the chance to be involved in this year’s flu campaign. Part of the exciting challenge of projects like this is thinking up the ideas and one of the patients had the great idea of creating a superhero character.”

Conclusions: Our results provide a snapshot of the current evidence of effectiveness for a range of health-related apps. Large sample, high-quality, adequately powered, randomized controlled trials are required. In light of the bias evident in the included studies, better reporting of health-related app interventions is also required. The widespread adoption of mobile phones highlights a significant opportunity to impact health behaviors globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

Patients who recover from an acute episode of psychosis are frequently prescribed prophylactic antipsychotics for many years, especially if they are diagnosed as having schizophrenia. However, there is a dearth of evidence concerning the long-term effectiveness of this practice, and growing concern over the cumulative effects of antipsychotics on physical health and brain structure. Although controversy remains concerning some of the data, the wise psychiatrist should regularly review the benefit to each patient of continuing prophylactic antipsychotics against the risk of side-effects and loss of effectiveness through the development of supersensitivity of the dopamine D2 receptor. Psychiatrists should work with their patients to slowly reduce the antipsychotic to the lowest dose that prevents the return of distressing symptoms. Up to 40% of those whose psychosis remits after a first episode should be able to achieve a good outcome in the long term either with no antipsychotic medication or with a very low dose. Objective: Disrupted sleep is a central feature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The precise nature of that disruption is not agreed upon, however, and there is no explanation for why sleep disruptions are detected in some PTSD-diagnosed individuals but not in others. We tested the novel proposition that PTSD-diagnosed individuals with prominent hyperarousal symptoms will have more disrupted sleep than those without such symptoms. Many have argued that self-care should play a critical role in graduate training in professional psychology (Bamonti et al., 2014; Barnett & Cooper, 2009; Elman & Forrest, 2007; Norcross & Guy, 2007); however, the existing research on the effectiveness of self-care activities for graduate students has produced somewhat mixed results. The purpose of this review was to use meta-analytic techniques to synthesis the findings from studies examining the relationship between self-care use and positive outcomes for professional psychology graduate students. Staff from different cultural backgrounds recognised that a combination of stigma, language barriers and other factors meant that fewer people from these communities sought help for depression, anxiety, anger issues or stress.
In order to raise awareness of these issues, staff developed a play called 'mein pagal nein huhn' which means ‘I am not mad’ in Urdu.
The nurses were winners in the Trafford division and were recognised for creating innovative ‘Be Happy’ bunting for young people - a foldout leaflet which lists different activities and lifestyle changes that can improve physical and emotional health.
The guide was developed by nurse Lisa Webster and uses the acronym BE HAPPY to spell out: breakfast, enjoy, healthy, achieve, positive, praise and you, and on the back of each letter is a space for young people to jot down notes and ideas.
The nurses were also praised for developing a Facebook page to communicate with parents about everything from emotional health to vaccinations.
The Bury Children’s Community Nursing Team (CCNT), which is part of Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, won one of the Trust’s Principles of Care Awards for going the extra mile to provide excellent care.
The team was chosen as winners in the Bury division for the Specialist Navigator project which saw them working with hospitals, GPs and other community health organisations to help reduce hospital admissions and allow children who were well enough to be discharged early.
They visited children on wards at North Manchester General Hospital to identify those who, with the right support, could be discharged.
This included nurses providing home visits several times a day, where necessary, to check symptoms, deliver medication and support parents.
The team also worked with GP practices and other health organisations to raise awareness of the support they could offer to prevent unnecessary admissions.

There is growing concern that the UK is not performing as well as it should in securing and promoting health for children and young people.1 The reasons behind the UK's child health problems are complex, including socioeconomic conditions and other upstream determinants of health, and health systems and healthcare factors, as shown in figure 1. A comprehensive strategy to improve UK child health should therefore include action across all the domains and determinants of health. Integrated care is about joining things up in order to meet health needs, and in ways that make sense to children and families....To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.

According to a new Age UK report, the current availability of mental health services does not meet the increasingly high demand from our ageing population.
This is a challenging time for all journals but particularly for those such as CAMH, which must achieve a balance between informing, influencing and transforming the quality and effectiveness of the mental healthcare available to children, young people, their parents and families, while endeavouring to publish high-quality scientific papers in terms of indicators such as the impact factor (IF). It is also a challenging time more widely in terms of the changing mental health needs of children, and the ability of CAMH services to meet them. This editorial discusses a number of changes that will be made the CAMH journal in 2017 to address these issues. Login using your SSSFT NHS OpenAthens for full text. The aim of our study was to identify psychiatric and cognitive disorders among older prison inmates and to investigate whether there is an association between mental disorders and cognitive impairment. 138 men aged 50 and over were recruited in seven French prisons (Group 1) and 138 men aged 50 and over were recruited from the general public (Group 2). The results reveal very significant differences in the incidence of mental disorders and in cognitive performance between the two groups. However, there does not appear to be a significant link between mental disorders and cognitive performance. We discuss the risk factors for mental disorders and cognitive impairment. We raise particularly the issue of depression, which is the most common pathology in this population and which is generally associated with the risk of suicide. The concept of leadership has been studied in various disciplines and from different theoretical approaches. It is a dynamic concept that evolves over time. There are few studies in our field on managers’ self-perception of their leadership style. There are no pure styles, but one or another style is generally favoured to a greater or lesser degree. In the primary health care (PHC) setting, managers’ leadership style is defined as a set of attitudes, behaviours, beliefs and values. The objectives of this study were to describe and learn about the self-perception of behaviours and leadership styles among PHC managers; to determine the influence of the leadership style on job satisfaction, efficiency, and willingness to work in a team; and to determine the relationship between transformational and transactional styles according age, gender, profession, type of manager years of management experience, and the type of organization.

The proposal outlined in this consultation will legally ensure that information that staff provide as part of a health service investigation will be kept confidential except where there is an immediate risk to patient safety, or where the High Court makes an order permitting disclosure. This broadly mirrors the procedures followed in air accidents investigations.
The aim to create a balanced safe space and to make sure the proposal reassures staff that the information they provide will not be passed on; and also reassures patients and families that they will be given the full facts of their, or their loved ones’, care.

Pain and dementia are common in older people, and impaired cognitive abilities make it difficult for them to communicate their pain. Pain, if poorly managed, impairs health and well-being. Accurate pain assessment in this vulnerable group is challenging for hospital staff, but essential for appropriate management. Robust methods for identifying, assessing and managing pain are needed.
Exposure and response prevention (EX/RP) is an evidence-based treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet not all patients achieve wellness with EX/RP.
