Abstract
Various attempts to define Israelite prophecy as one role,
e.g., ecstatic or person in communion with the divine, have not been
particularly successful. Especially unfortunate is the view of the prophet
as declaimer rather than social interactor. A study of Haggai, the oracles
as well as the redactional framework, suggests that the prophet's role
could be more pastoral-prophetic than simply that of the public speaker.
Haggai's oracles function in response to concerns of the people and not
simply as a function of his own programmatic interests.
