The problems of deformity and disability in cerebral palsy.

Abstract

The relationship of deformity and dysfunction has been studied on 67 children with spastic hemiplegia. The usual treatment of conditions resulting from polioencephalitis acuta infantum consists in improving both achievements and skills or in taking measures aimed at reducing the deformity. At best, both of these therapeutical approaches may be used. Quite often, however, it is necessary to decide which of the two approaches is the best one for the patient in question. Also perhaps by improving the patient's achievements, while the deformity is increased. What is also of great consequence in this particular respect is a skillful and responsible psychotherapeutical treatment of the patient.
