Abstract

Applying laser points to activities that require interaction has been increasing in recent years. For example, group meetings and other virtual situations require people to interact at a distance from a display surface. However, using laser pointer to assist formal teaching and learning has been scarce. This paper presents new interaction techniques that use a laser pointer to interact with the projected display on a large screen. The laser pointer first generates a light spot on the screen. The camera is then used to detect the position of the laser pointer dot on the screen. The software on the computer then emulates the pointing actions of the mouse, draws the spot track (path drawing), zooms in important areas on the screen, clears screen and implement the function of page up and page down of slideshows. The laser pointer will behave as an active point on the projected display where the teacher can interact. This laser pointer system includes hardware for teachers to execute commands, and the specialized hardware makes it easy for teachers to execute fast and continuous commands.
