Abstract

It has been shown that default reasoning is a convenient means for interpreting user utterances in context. Overlay is the combination of default unification and a scoring function where the latter is used for computing the degree of similarity between new and old information. In this work we continue our efforts for default unification of typed feature structures by giving an efficient algorithm for multiple inheritance hierarchies. Our main contribution is that, contrary to previous suggestions, most of the computation can be done on the type hierarchy. The scoring function is adapted accordingly.
