Region Bucks the Global Trend

.
(2002)

Abstract

Asia has long had a vibrant telecoms industry with its reputation for technology-savvy consumers willing to snap up the latest in mobile or internet gadgetry. But as telecoms executives prepare to fly into Hong Kong for next month's ITU Telecom Asia 2002 forum*, the contrast between the sector's fortunes in the region compared with the rest of the world could hardly be greater. While the industry in the US and Europe is wrestling with accounting scandals and concerns over the cost of 3G licences, Asian countries such as South Korea are already embracing the mobile internet and showing it can be profitable. Asian companies have become so strong in mobile technology, in particular, that there is talk that some, such as SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics, might supplant the major European players as global leaders in the telecoms sector.
