Die Regierung in Ottawa will das Land wirtschaftlich unabhängiger von den USA machen. Dazu braucht sie Ceta und treibt zugleich weitere Handelsverträge voran.
Bis zum Schluss war das Flugzeug des kanadischen Premiers Trudeau startbereit. Als dann die Nachricht kam, dass Regierung und Vertreter der Regionen in Belgien ihre Verhandlungen vertagen, sagte er die Teilnahme am CETA-Gipfel ab. Doch Kanada bleibt zuversichtlich.
Es bleibt unklar, ob die EU das Ceta-Abkommen unterzeichnen kann. Kanadas Premier Justin Trudeau reagiert gereizt – auch weil er bereits viele Zugeständnisse gemacht hat.
Wirtschaftsminister Sigmar Gabriel glaubt, dass der Ceta-Handelsdeal zwischen der EU und Kanada schon 2017 greifen kann. In Bratislava einigten sich die zuständigen EU-Minister auf eine Zusatzerklärung, die Bedenken ausräumen soll.
