The finite element method is applied to the study of natural frequencies and modes of vibration of
sagged cables. Extensional characteristics of the element are fully considered. The method is applied to a numerical
example taken from the literature and which has previously been analysed by classical and other methods. The
results obtained by the use of a straight element are compared with those obtained by the use of curved elements.
Finally, a parametric study is conducted to determine the influence of various parameters on the spectrum of
natural frequencies of a sagged cable and appropriate nondimensional curves are presented. These non-dimensional
curves give an insight into the general characteristics of the sagged cable, and can be used to predict in-plane
natural frequencies over a wide range of sag/span ratio.
