Abstract
Since 1974 research on the biological effects of
50 Hz electric fields has been carried out in Italy
by ENEL within the framework of the 1000 kV
Project.
After a brief description of the results obtained
from experiments performed on laboratory animals
(mice, rats, rabbits and dogs), the report illustrates
the research program started at the end of
1979 and the preliminary results achieved by exposing
chickens and dogs, in natural conditions, at
the experimental plant of Suvereto.
The exposure areas are located under the UHV
test line. The chickens, housed in a 7 x 7 m enclosure,
are continuously exposed to an electric
field of about 15 kV /m to analyze any possible embryonal
or teratogenic effects of the electric field
on their eggs and to study their macro-as well as
microstructure growth curves over three generations.
To investigate possible refusal to stay in high
electric fields, five dogs have been housed in a
10 x 50 m enclosure, where the electric field at
ground varies between 2 and 18 kV /m. Continuous
photographing of the enclosure enables the dogs'
behaviour to be studies.
Together with these last investigations, theoretj_
cal studies are in progress in order to find a possl_
ble way of extrapolating to humans the biological
results achieved during experimental research on
animals.
