Abstract
Argues that "best practices" are not often effectively evaluated and that advice based on "best practices" frequently fails to take into consideration the contexts of individual institutions. Calls attention to common practices that can impede efforts to diversify faculty. These include inadequate planning, lack of thought about building consensus about and ownership of initiatives, neglecting helpful expertise available from other campus, higher education associations, and consultations; ignoring the campus climate; not establishing a clear rationale for the initiative; not developing or implementing an effective assessment plan; underestimating the time required to institute change; not investing sufficiently in staff and resources; identifying initiative too closely with key leaders.
