Abstract
Engineers need to ensure that line design will accommodate the required power transfer.
Electrical aspects are covered by paying attention to the separation distance between the
phases of the line (if alternating current) while the number of conductors in the conductor
bundle is determined by corona and noise constraints, especially when operating above·
132 kV. Corona and noise aspects dictate minimum distances between phases of AC
lines, and the height above ground of ~C lines.
The configuration of the conductors or conductor bundles is the most important aspect.
The sub-conductor spacing and the number of conductors per phase have a significant
impact on the current rating and the electrical field profiles surrounding the phases and
the separation between the phases. Midspan conductor clashing is avoided by calculating
the minimum clearance requirements during normal swing conditions as caused by lateral
wind forces.
