Abstract
Recently in Japan. the number of bundle conductor transmission lines for bulk power has increased
and faults due to galloping occurred frequently.
However, it is difficult to say that counter-measures for conductor galloping have been established.

The authors constructed a test line at Kasatori-yama (Mount Kasatori) where meteorological conditions are
very severe, and obtained a large amount of data on various phenomena of bundle conductor galloping due
to artificial and natural ice formations. This report summarises the following :
• Aspects of ice or snow formation and damage to overhead transmission lines in Japan
•Mutual relations between the wind velocity, amplitude of galloping, tension changes, oscillation
mode, etc. under galloping
• Method for tower design of overhead transmission lines.
