This report presents the findings of a review of the self-inflicted deaths in prison custody in 2016, with a particular focus on the way in which mental health concerns were identified, assessed and managed, to see whether a pattern of common factors exists. The review reinforces the need for prison and healthcare staff to work together to ensure the best outcomes for people with mental health needs. It also sets out the wider work already underway to make prisons safer.

Prisoners with mental health difficulties need better help following release from both health and probation services, according to a report published today by Centre for Mental Health.
Government does not know how many people in prison have a mental illness, how much it is spending on mental health in prisons or whether it is achieving its objectives. It is therefore hard to see how Government can be achieving value for money in its efforts to improve the mental health and well being of prisoners. In 2016 there were 40,161 incidents of self-harm in prisons and 120 self-inflicted deaths.
