Sustained abstinence is currently the only accepted end‐point for pharmacotherapy trials for most substance use disorders (SUD), with the exception of alcohol. Despite recent efforts, the identification of a non‐abstinence alternative as a clinically meaningful end‐point for drug use trials has been elusive.. Baclofen has been shown to reduce alcohol consumption in alcohol‐dependent individuals, but there is marked heterogeneity in response. An association between GABBR1 rs29220 and alcohol dependence has been demonstrated previously. The present study evaluated whether the response to baclofen is moderated by a single nucleotide polymorphism (rs29220) in the GABAB receptor subunit 1 gene (GABBR1).. Considering that jurisdictions are moving toward cannabis legalization and the anticipated changes to the Canadian policy planned for July 2018, there is a need to understand whether cannabis use has a causal role in the development of psychiatric diseases, such as psychosis. Prospective studies report a temporal precedence of cannabis use before later onset of psychosis,1 but the evidence is limited with respect to causality due to studies only assessing psychosis symptoms (PS) at a single follow-up and by relying on analytic models that might confound intra-individual processes with initial between-person differences.. Open access. Although many studies suggest that religiosity is a protective factor against drug use, there is little information on its effect on drug consumption patterns of those who do use drugs.
In order to realise the potential of internet interventions, we need to develop an evidence base supporting the efficacy of internet interventions for co-occurring depression and hazardous alcohol use without any therapist involvement. This study aims to evaluate the effects on drinking, and on depressive symptoms, of combining an internet intervention targeting hazardous alcohol consumption with one for depression. Outcome monitoring forms and guidance on how alcohol and drug treatment outcomes information is collected and how it can be used to improve local services.
Natasha Clarke explores a systematic review of Whole of Community interventions to reduce population level harms arising from alcohol and other drug use.
We tested the age‐varying associations of cannabis use (CU) frequency and disorder (CUD) with psychotic, depressive, and anxiety symptoms in adolescent and adult samples. Moderating effects of early onset (≤15 years) and sex were tested.. Please contact the library to request a copy of this article - http://bit.ly/1Xyazai
Open access. Despite the link between stress and addictive behavior in adulthood, little is known about how early life stress in families predicts the early emergence of substance use in adolescence. This study tested a developmental cascade model, proposing that early stressful life events and negative parent‐child interaction covary, and both disrupt the refinement of inhibitory control, which evolves into problem behavior in middle/late childhood and subsequent substance use exploration in early adolescence.

Prescription opioid misuse among chronic pain patients is undergirded by self-regulatory deficits, affective distress, and opioid-cue reactivity. Dispositional mindfulness has been associated with enhanced self-regulation, lower distress, and adaptive autonomic responses following drug-cue exposure. We hypothesized that dispositional mindfulness might serve as a protective factor among opioid-treated chronic pain patients.. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.

This annual statistical report presents information on drug misuse among both adults and children. The topics covered include: •Prevalence of drug misuse, including the types of drugs used •Trends in drug misuse over recent years •Patterns of drug misuse among different groups of the population •Health outcomes related to drug misuse including hospital admissions, drug treatment and number of deaths.
Attachment styles have been shown to be an important predictor of relationship quality and well-being. They have also been linked with ability to function well in groups. Insecure attachment styles are thought to be an underlying cause of addiction and represent a target for change in one-to-one therapy. How attachment styles themselves affect group therapy for addiction is understudied. The current study addresses this gap by examining the effects of attachment styles on relapse and treatment retention amongst a population of people attending addiction therapy groups..
