A few months ago I was in Chile, where I was invited to lecture on issues in higher education. The moment I arrived, I was struck by how important the subject is in Chile, where it has a pervasive presence in everyday life.
Chile’s National Accreditation Commission has rejected the appeal of a university affiliated with the Baltimore-based for-profit education company, Laureate, after it was denied reaccreditation in October. The Universidad de Las Américas (UDLA) next plans to appeal the decision to the country’s Higher Education Council. As in the U.S., universities in Chile must be accredited in order for their students to access government-backed loans and grants.

En el encuentro anunció una serie de medidas, entre las que se encuentra la desmunicipalización de los colegios a través de una serie de agencias locales a cargo del Mineduc, y se comprometió a pagar la deuda histórica de los profesores.
La creación de aranceles diferenciados para la educación superior privada, la transformación del CAE (Crédito con Aval del Estado) en créditos blandos por parte del Banco Estado y siete Centros de Formación Técnica gratuitos a lo largo del país anunció el candidato presidencial.
María Olivia Monckeberg, antes de que estuviera en la agenda pública, denunció el lucro en la educación chilena. La periodista y escritora, quien ha publicado dos libros sobre esta problemática, conversó con CNN Chile sobre los detalles de su tercera publicación, titulada "Con Fines de Lucro".
"Con fines de lucro" es el nuevo libro de la periodista María Olivia Monckeberg que busca revelar "la escandalosa historia de las universidades privadas en Chile" en el que se revelan nuevos casos de irregularidades en las finanzas entre las instituciones de educación superior.
Nuevamente el Ministerio de Educación decidió dilatar la entrega de los resultados de las investigaciones administrativas que la cartera inició hace cerca de un año contra la Uniacc y la Universidad Pedro de Valdivia por supuesto lucro en el que habrían incurrido ambas casas de estudios superiores y que paralelamente también son indagadas por el Ministerio Público.
Los recientes resultados de los concursos de Convenios de Desempeño del MECESUP asignaron el 69% de los recursos de este fondo a instituciones privadas y el 31% a universidades estatales. Así lo dejan ver las adjudicaciones de proyectos en el área de Innovación Académica, Formación Inicial de Profesores y Fortalecimiento Técnico Profesional.
“Hay que asegurar que ningún peso público pueda terminar incrementando el lucro que está prohibido”, afirmó el Rector Víctor Pérez, quien cuestionó las altas sumas de dinero que reciben las universidades privadas, sin control fiscal.
