New and expectant mothers across the country can now access specialist mental health care in the area where they live, NHS England announced today.
The landmark rollout of specialist perinatal community services across the whole of England, means that mums and mums-to-be who are experiencing anxiety, depression or other forms of mental ill health should be able to access high quality care much closer to home.

NHS England has confirmed that new and expectant mums will be able to access specialist perinatal mental health community services in every part of the country by April next year.
The health service is now spending £23 million rolling out the second wave of community perinatal services to underserved parts of the country and is on course to achieve full geographical coverage, when as recently as 2014 it was estimated that only three per cent of the country had good access to perinatal mental health care.
This document sets out policy drivers and strategic context for transforming perinatal mental health care, as well as pathways to deliver transformation. It provides services with evidence on what works in perinatal mental health and case studies of positive practice.
The £23 million funding is part of a major programme of improvement and investment by NHS England which will see a total of 30,000 additional women getting specialist mental health care, in person and through online consultations including over skype, during the early stages of motherhood, supported by a total of £365m, by 2021.

NHS England has today published new ratings on mental health and maternity, highlighting where areas are performing really well, but also helping to identify where improvements can be made.
As part of the new Clinical Commissioning Group Improvement and Assessment Framework (CCGIAF) for 2016/17, an initial baseline rating of CCGs in six clinical priority areas is being be published. This includes maternity and mental health.
