There are high levels of comorbidity between mental health and somatic diagnoses. Clinicians must avoid misattributing service users’ new symptoms to the original diagnosis, whilst also being aware of diagnostic overshadowing. These could be indicating a comorbid diagnoses that needs identifying, and without this identification the complexities of each case overall cannot be addressed. Clinicians and service providers should also be aware of the complexities comorbidities create for individuals and their carers, and should aim to provide (or signpost to) cross-sector support where possible.
Clinical guidelines recommend providing physical activity interventions (PAIs) to people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder for weight management. However, the cost-effectiveness of PAIs is unknown. To read the full article, choose Open Athens “Institutional Login” and search for “Midlands Partnership”.
The integration of smoking cessation treatment in NHS Talking Therapies would help people with mental health conditions who smoke receive evidence-based support for both at the same time and location. However, more funding and staffing of these talking therapies would be necessary if the intervention was implemented. There are already long-wait times of twenty-three weeks (162 days) for an initial consultation for NHS Talking Therapies (NHS, n.d.). Making another population eligible for these services would potentially overwhelm these services and increase wait times. With the evidence in mind, it would be useful for clinicians to gather information on smoking and substance use during the initial mental health assessment and inform their practice.
Massage therapy has recognised psychological benefits, yet it is rarely used in forensic mental health settings. .... Seated chair massage was found to have overwhelmingly positive effects in the short term and the authors concluded that it is a low-risk, boundaried and appropriate complementary therapy intervention for patients in forensic mental health settings.

Although efforts from within mental health contexts are fundamental, it is also essential that a collaborative interdisciplinary approach is taken to address the “multifactorial nature of risk” for premature mortality due to suicide and physical health comorbidities.
Accordingly, efforts to address premature mortality require a multi-systems approach. Governments, funders, and policymakers need to acknowledge this as a priority area and dedicate sufficient funding.
The burden of dental diseases is significantly higher in people with psychiatric and substance-use disorders, and particularly those with SMI compared to the general population.
The objective of the present study was to systematically review the existing literature for studies examining the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and stroke risk and perform a meta-analysis to obtain a pooled risk estimate describing the association.
Cannabis is used by one third of youth in Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) programs and high dose consumption of the primary constituent Δ-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is associated with higher risk for relapse in this group. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a secondary cannabis constituent that may have antipsychotic properties, though its health risks are only beginning to be understood. Little is known about the views of youth in EPI programs toward CBD, including their reasons for use and perceptions of risk.
Emerging evidence supports a bidirectional phenotypic association between stress-related disorders and autoimmune disease. However, the biological underpinnings remain unclear. Here, the authors examined whether and how shared genetics contribute to the observed phenotypic associations. Individuals with mental illness experience significantly higher overall rates of morbidity and mortality than counterparts without mental illness. Misdiagnosis of symptoms emanating from physical illnesses as psychiatric in nature presents one important cause.
This retrospective cohort study aimed to identify the cardiometabolic characteristics, cross-sectionally and longitudinally, associated with clinical stage in youth accessing early intervention mental health services.
People with severe mental ill health (SMI) experience some of the largest health inequalities of any sector within society. For these inequalities to be reduced, an understanding of the behavioural determinants of health in this population is needed. Certain conditions are seemingly under-diagnosed at the point of schizophrenia diagnosis, possibly resulting from under-investigation or diagnostic overshadowing, which is more common among this group (Jones, Howard & Thornicroft, 2008). This is a widespread issue with data suggesting that at the end of 2021, a mere 35% of people with severe mental illness received annual health checks (NHS England, 2020). This points to the need for improvement in the monitoring, screening and diagnosis of physical health conditions for individuals with severe mental illness.
Several psychotropic drugs can induce weight gain and metabolic alterations. Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases are the leading contributors to the early mortality associated with psychotic disorders. To date, it has not been possible to disentangle the effect of medication and non-medication factors on the physical health of people with a first episode of psychosis (FEP). This study aimed to isolate the effects of antipsychotic medication on anthropometric measurements, fasting glucose and lipids.
The aim of the study was to estimate the annual health care cost by number of comorbid mental and somatic disorders in persons with a mental disorder. To read the full article, choose Open Athens “Institutional Login” and search for “Midlands Partnership”.
People with severe mental illness (SMI) may experience excess mortality and inequitable treatment following acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, cardioprotective pharmacotherapy and SMI diagnoses other than schizophrenia are rarely examined in previous reviews. We hypothesized that SMI including bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with increased post-ACS mortality, decreased revascularization, and cardioprotective medication receipt relative to those without SMI. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has long been associated with a heightened risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). A number of mechanisms have been implicated to underlie this brain–heart axis relationship, such as altered functioning of the autonomic nervous system and increased systemic inflammation. While neural alterations have repeatedly been observed in PTSD, they are rarely considered in the PTSD–CVD link. Antipsychotic-induced weight gain is associated with alterations to the composition of the gut microbiota. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of probiotics plus dietary fiber on antipsychotic-induced weight gain.
the authors stated that in the absence of definitive evidence for particular interventions, the BSDH oral health mental health guidelines should be followed. These guidelines promote a patient-centred approach to oral health promotion amongst people with severe mental illness (SMI) based on their individual health needs, such as type and severity of mental illness, living arrangements and physical health. They also recommended completing an oral health assessment and care plan, and educating healthcare professionals on addressing oral health needs through a multidisciplinary approach.
