Unter dem Namen „Verteidige dein Netz“ hat Google vor einigen Wochen eine große Kampagne gegen das geplante Leistungsschutzrecht für Zeitungs- und Zeitschriften-Verlage begonnen.

Die Forderung nach einem reduzierten Mehrwertsteuersatz für kostenpflichtige Onlinemedien stößt bei Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel auf offene Ohren. Bei den VDZ-Zeitschriftentagen sagte Merkel, die Regierung werde das Thema prüfen. Entscheidend sei dabei die Frage der Abgrenzung: �Nicht alle Online-Angebote gehören zum Grundbedarf." Schlechte Nachrichten für die Zeitschriftenverleger: Laut einer Studie der Unternehmensberatung Booz & Company müssen sich die Zeitschriftenverlage auf weiter sinkende Verkaufszahlen einstellen.
Über zwei Drittel (69 Prozent) der vom Verband Deutscher Zeitschriftenverleger (VDZ) befragten Mitglieder rechnen in diesem Jahr damit, dass ihr Ertrag schlechter als 2008 sein wird. Der Verband geht von einem Umsatzrückgang von 9,4 Prozent auf rund 6,86 Milliarden Euro aus. 2010 soll der Branchenumsatz zwar stagnieren (Prognose: plus 0,1 Prozent), aber der Personalabbau wird weiter voranschreiten (minus 3,7 Prozent).
