Seit langem ist die Nachweissituation für digitalisierte Drucke in Deutschland ungenügend. Viele einschlägige Projekte oder Titel lassen sich entweder nicht oder nur sehr schwer auffinden. Um diesem immer wieder beklagten Mangel abzuhelfen, bauen die AG Sammlung Deutscher Drucke (SDD), die Verbundzentrale des Gemeinsamen Bibliotheksverbundes (VZG) und das Hochschulbibliothekszentrum (hbz), gefördert von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), seit dem 1.4.2005 ein Zentrales Verzeichnis Digitalisierter Drucke (zvdd) auf, um einen zentralen Nachweis und Zugang zu digitalisierten Bibliotheksmaterialien bereitzustellen.
