2001 kam die Abkürzung "BRIC“ für die aufstrebenden Länder Brasilien, Russland, Indien und China auf. Seit 2010 wird auch Südafrika dazugezählt. Da sie sich in den internationalen Institutionen nicht angemessen repräsentiert fühlen, bietet ihnen die BRICS-Gruppe ein wichtiges Forum, um gemeinsame Interessen zu artikulieren.
Die Forschungsgruppe untersucht aktuelle Umbrüche in den Schlüsselbranchen des industriellen Sektors vor dem Hintergrund der Globalisierung und des technisch-organisatorischen Wandels.
