Compassion is an essential component of good quality care. Compassion towards people with dementia in health systems is often suboptimal, which can have negative impacts on clinical outcomes and patient experience. Attitudes are formed early in training and the literature on healthcare student compassion towards those with dementia is limited. This study aimed to understand how undergraduate medical and nursing students understand compassion towards people with dementia and factors influencing the delivery of compassionate care.

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is imperative for ensuring patient safety. Although teaching strategies to enhance EBP knowledge and skills are recommended, recent research indicates that nurses may not be well prepared to apply EBP. A three-level hierarchy for teaching and learning evidence-based medicine is suggested, including the requirement for interactive clinical activities in EBP teaching strategies. This literature review identifies the teaching strategies for EBP knowledge and skills currently used in undergraduate nursing education. We also describe students’ and educators’ experiences with learning outcomes and barriers.

While the RCN is determined to see the successful integration of nursing associates into the current workforce, the College is concerned that the role remains ill-defined and that could lead to nursing associates being asked to perform duties outside the remit of a support role. This could put undue pressure on individuals and have an impact on patient care.
The Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) has clarified that apprenticeship funding can be used to cover the cost of clinical placements for nursing associates.
Nursing associate apprentices are required to undertake mandatory clinical placements in settings other than the primary place of employment, and up to £2,500 can be used to cover the costs attributed to this.
Last week we launched ambitious new standards that set out the skills and knowledge the next generation of nurses need. We also introduced a more modern and innovative approach to the way universities and their practise partners train nurses and midwives. We have therefore created a new resource to help employers think through the different routes. This resource has been tested with employers to ensure it is as helpful as possible.
