The aim of this study was to compare the feasibility and effectiveness of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) with that of high‐intensity volitional resistance training for improving muscle structure and function and physical function in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We also compared pre‐intervention and post‐intervention values of myocyte characteristics. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a severe clinical entity associated with high mortality in the adult population. HLH has been associated with infections, malignancy and autoimmune conditions such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), however this is often in the context of a disease flare. Currently, there are limited reports of inaugural SLE manifesting as HLH with a lack of consensus on treatment and management of these patients. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
The present study aimed (a) to evaluate the clinical and radiographic characteristics of hand erosive osteoarthritis (EOA) in a group of consecutive patients, (b) to correlate the severity of radiographic involvement with clinical and laboratory findings and (c) to associate the levels of pain and functional impairment with some radiographic findings. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes joint inflammation. It affects around 400,000 people in the UK and 1 million adults in the USA. Given the appropriate treatment, many can have relatively few symptoms. It is therefore important to understand what it is like to live with rheumatoid arthritis and gain insight into peoples’ decisions about utilising healthcare. The aims of this study were: (1) to bring together qualitative evidence syntheses that explore patients’ experience of living with rheumatoid arthritis and (2) develop a conceptual understanding of what it is like to live with rheumatoid arthritis. Recent studies have suggested that fibromyalgia is inaccurately diagnosed in the community, and that ~75% of persons reporting a physician diagnosis of fibromyalgia would not satisfy published criteria. To investigate possible diagnostic misclassification, we compared expert physician diagnosis with published criteria. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.

Physical activity (PA) has a number of benefits for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. However, these patients are more physically inactive than the general population. Limitations in upper limb functioning are common in Musculoskeletal disorders and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand scale (DASH) has gained widespread use in this context. However, various concerns have been raised about its construct validity and so this study seeks to examine this and other psychometric aspects of both the DASH and QuickDASH from a modern test theory perspective. The Manchester Foot Pain and Disability Index (MFPDI) is a patient-reported outcome tool used to measure foot pain and foot-related disability. The English version of the MFPDI has been successfully translated into other European languages, but there was no Chinese version to use in Chinese-speaking communities. The cross-sectional correlational study aimed to translate the MFPDI from English into simplified Chinese (C-MFPDI) and to test its psychometric properties among people with inflammatory arthritis in Singapore. Guidelines recommend foot orthoses for people with both early (< 2 years) and established rheumatoid arthritis (RA). While prefabricated foot orthoses are cheaper and can exhibit comparable effects to customised devices, the available evidence for their effectiveness is inconsistent. Little is known about what types of foot orthoses clinicians prescribe. This study describes the foot orthoses prescription habits of podiatrists for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Open Access
Joint replacement surgery is a proxy of severe joint damage in rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
