ORCHA presents a means of assessing the quality, safety, value and risk of the hundreds of thousands of apps available to choose from, so we can begin to do so. http://www.orcha.co.uk/ [Includes searchable database of apps, including some that couldn't be/hadn't been assessed]
Clinical effectiveness: Sleepio has potential to have a positive impact for adults with poor sleep compared with standard care. There is good quality evidence that Sleepio improves sleep but the effect size varies between studies, and none of the studies compared Sleepio with face-to-face cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT‑I).
Clinical effectiveness: GDm‑Health has the potential to have a positive impact for people with gestational diabetes. There is some evidence that the app is a reliable method to communicate blood glucose levels and improves patient satisfaction with their care. However, there is currently no evidence comparing GDm‑Health with standard care and so the impact on clinical outcomes is uncertain.
Clinical effectiveness: ChatHealth has potential to have a positive impact as a communication platform in school nursing services compared with standard care. There is no comparative or quantitative evidence with relevant outcomes to demonstrate clinical effectiveness. Limited evidence is available on the use of the system and type of queries received.
Public Health England (PHE) has developed a process to encourage the development of effective health apps.
This recommended assessment procedure was created in order for apps to be considered for use by health professionals, and has been developed and refined through consultation and real-life testing.
