There is limited study of suicidal behaviors among veterans identifying as sexual and gender minorities (SGMs), despite previous research indicating rates of suicide attempts are high within civilian SGM populations. Further, some research incorporating military service members suggests those identifying as SGMs are disproportionately exposed to military sexual trauma (MST), an additional risk factor for negative psychiatric sequelae. . Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is 1 of the more prevalent mental health diagnoses for veterans. Group therapy can be an effective and efficient means of treating PTSD, yet the literature exploring treatment outcomes for racial minorities has been mixed and limited. The present study was an evaluation across racial groups of the PTSD Recovery Program, a manualized group therapy implemented at a Veterans Affairs hospital. Data were collected from male veterans ( N = 450) who identified as non-Hispanic White or non-Hispanic African American and participated in a 10-week, combat-related, group therapy program between 2010 and 2014. . Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a primary mental health concern of veterans. In clinical settings, efforts to improve broad facets beyond symptom amelioration and consideration of moderators of treatment effectiveness in this population are needed for continued improvement in care. General self-efficacy (GSE) has been indicated as a useful treatment target because of its association with positive outcomes such as increased positive health behaviors. Both race and educational attainment represent potential moderators of treatment response that are relevant for a veteran PTSD population. This study aimed to determine whether a PTSD Recovery Group Therapy Program resulted in improvement in GSE and whether racial and educational differences moderated GSE outcomes.. Understanding the links between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and functional impairment is essential for assisting veterans in transitioning to civilian life. Moreover, there may be differences between men and women in the relationships between PTSD symptoms and functional impairment. However, no prior studies have examined the links between functional impairment and the revised symptom clusters as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed. (DSM–5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) or whether the associations between PTSD symptom clusters and functional impairment differ by gender.. Severe mental illness (SMI) and substance use disorders (SUD) are among the more chronic and costly mental health conditions treated in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Service use patterns of returning veterans with SMI and SUD have received little attention. We examined gender differences in the utilization of VA services among a national sample of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) VA patients with SMI, SUD, and their comorbidity (SMI/SUD) in their first year of established VA care (N = 24,166). Transgender veterans (trans-vets) experience high rates of discrimination, family rejection, homelessness, and suicidality, yet little is known about trans-vets’ potentially positive experiences. There has been minimal qualitative research on the subjective experiences at the intersection of transgender and veteran identity. No study to date has focused on describing resilience among trans-vets. The aims of the current study were to identify major themes related to both challenges and strengths in the lived experiences of trans-vets, as well as advice they would give to their fellow trans-vets.
