Schizophrenia is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), although there is variation in risk among individuals. There are indications of shared genetic etiology between schizophrenia and CVD, but the nature of the overlap remains unclear. The aim of this study was to fill this gap in knowledge. People with severe mental illness (SMI) may experience excess mortality and inequitable treatment following acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, cardioprotective pharmacotherapy and SMI diagnoses other than schizophrenia are rarely examined in previous reviews. We hypothesized that SMI including bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with increased post-ACS mortality, decreased revascularization, and cardioprotective medication receipt relative to those without SMI. Cannabis is used by one third of youth in Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) programs and high dose consumption of the primary constituent Δ-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is associated with higher risk for relapse in this group. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a secondary cannabis constituent that may have antipsychotic properties, though its health risks are only beginning to be understood. Little is known about the views of youth in EPI programs toward CBD, including their reasons for use and perceptions of risk.

Open access. This was a prospective, longitudinal study of patients followed for 19 years after entering specialized treatment for substance use disorders. At baseline 291 patients (mean age 38.3 years, standard deviation 11.4 years, 72% male) with high psychiatric co-morbidity were recruited; 130 (45%) had lifetime alcohol use disorder alone, while 161 (55%) had poly-substance use disorders. Time and causes of death were gathered from the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry. Lifetime psychiatric symptom disorders and substance use disorders at baseline were measured with The Composite International Diagnostic Interview and personality disorders at baseline were measured with The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory II.
Open access. Health education is particularly important for people with mental illness because they are at higher risk of becoming overweight or obese and developing type 2 diabetes than are members of the general population. However, little is known about how to provide health education activities that promote engagement and motivation among people with mental illness.
