Holistic care helps nurses identify key risk factors, such as unhealthy diet and smoking, in people with severe mental illness. There are several reasons why physical health monitoring is important in people with severe mental illness (SMI). This article focuses on two: improving physical health outcomes and extending the scope of mental health nursing practice. Prior research has solely focused on the association between handgrip strength and risk of depression in single countries or general populations, but more knowledge is required from wider-spread cohorts and target populations. Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases are the leading contributors to the early mortality associated with psychotic disorders. To date, it has not been possible to disentangle the effect of medication and non-medication factors on the physical health of people with a first episode of psychosis (FEP). This study aimed to isolate the effects of antipsychotic medication on anthropometric measurements, fasting glucose and lipids.
The aim of the study was to estimate the annual health care cost by number of comorbid mental and somatic disorders in persons with a mental disorder. To read the full article, choose Open Athens “Institutional Login” and search for “Midlands Partnership”.
People with severe mental illness (SMI) may experience excess mortality and inequitable treatment following acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, cardioprotective pharmacotherapy and SMI diagnoses other than schizophrenia are rarely examined in previous reviews. We hypothesized that SMI including bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with increased post-ACS mortality, decreased revascularization, and cardioprotective medication receipt relative to those without SMI. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has long been associated with a heightened risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). A number of mechanisms have been implicated to underlie this brain–heart axis relationship, such as altered functioning of the autonomic nervous system and increased systemic inflammation. While neural alterations have repeatedly been observed in PTSD, they are rarely considered in the PTSD–CVD link. Antipsychotic-induced weight gain is associated with alterations to the composition of the gut microbiota. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of probiotics plus dietary fiber on antipsychotic-induced weight gain.
the authors stated that in the absence of definitive evidence for particular interventions, the BSDH oral health mental health guidelines should be followed. These guidelines promote a patient-centred approach to oral health promotion amongst people with severe mental illness (SMI) based on their individual health needs, such as type and severity of mental illness, living arrangements and physical health. They also recommended completing an oral health assessment and care plan, and educating healthcare professionals on addressing oral health needs through a multidisciplinary approach.
People with serious mental illness (SMI) are more likely to develop chronic health conditions and die prematurely. Timely identification of modifiable health risk factors may enable early intervention. We aimed to describe the physical health characteristics and service utilization of young people with SMI. The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with weight gain prevention among young adults with serious mental illness who participated in the Fit Forward randomized controlled trial evaluating lifestyle interventions adapted for this high-risk group. The aims were to: (1) examine baseline differences between participants that gained weight and those that lost or maintained weight at six and 12 months, and (2) evaluate whether changes in weight control strategies were associated with weight gain prevention at 6 and 12 months.. Perception of loneliness has been identified as the strongest predictor of health-related quality of life assessed with the Assessment of Quality of Life-4D in people with psychotic disorders. We aimed to establish contributors to perceived loneliness, and ascertain the mediating role of loneliness in the relationship between identified contributors to loneliness and other known predictors of health-related quality of life with health-related quality of life. People with serious mental illness (SMI; e.g. schizophrenia) have mortality rates two to three times higher than the general population, largely due to a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Healthy lifestyle interventions can improve the health of people with SMI, but information about why these interventions work for some and not others is scarce. Our study aims to qualitatively explore differences in these two groups’ overall experiences and application of the intervention. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
Antipsychotics may increase serum prolactin, which has particularly been observed with risperidone. Further, hyperprolactinemia has been linked to osteoporosis‐related fractures. Therefore, we investigated fracture risk in a nationwide cohort exposed to antipsychotics.. To read the full article, log in using your NHS Athens details. People with a mental illness are more susceptible to physical ill health than the general population, which leads to significantly higher mortality rates among this group. Reasons for this include lifestyle factors such as smoking, lack of exercise and poor diet. Inadequate knowledge and skills about physical health among mental health nurses can lead to uncoordinated care and inadequate access to physical health services for people with mental ill health.
