Open access. Trauma-informed approaches emerged partly in response to research demonstrating that trauma is widespread across society, that it is highly correlated with mental health and that this is a costly public health issue. The fundamental shift in providing support using a trauma-informed approach is to move from thinking ‘What is wrong with you?’ to considering ‘What happened to you?’. This article, authored by trauma survivors and service providers, describes trauma-informed approaches to mental healthcare, why they are needed and how barriers can be overcome so that they can be implemented as an organisational change process.

As part of a five year strategy delivering a new package of sexual abuse and assault care across England, the NHS has set out plans for better care, including Sexual Assault Referral Centres integrated across community services and improved provision for men.
Several barriers to mental healthcare for refugees have been described, and principles for good mental care in this group have been framed. Evidence for specific interventions for refugees is available for trauma-related mental health problems. The best evidence is available for psychosocial interventions for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder.. North Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust’s (NEP) Veterans First Service, in partnership with Open Road and Walking with the Wounded, won the Specialist Services award at the prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) Value in Healthcare Awards last night (Tuesday). https://value.hsj.co.uk/
The three organisations work in partnership to help veterans with complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on issues such as employment and substance misuse. The service is a pilot with funding from NHS England and offers additional therapy, bespoke anger management, physical health checks, employment support, social activities and brief interventions for substance misuse to ex-service personnel.
